We joined this project when the Toyota team had already gathered user research and defined their requirements. One of the objectives was to make search easy and accessible to efficiently convert users into customers.

 

To address this objective we chose to combine horizontal and left-side navigation, putting the most important features to the left, and less important to the right — based on this research by NN Group. (Web users spend 80% of their time viewing the left half of the page and 20% viewing the right half.)

 

We then used A/B testing on a small group of users against another option with search on top, and our first option proved to have better results.

I was looking for a budgeting app for myself that meets two main requirements:


1. An ability to see how much I spent in one month compared

to the overall budget.

2. Simple and quick adding of transactions.

 

However, I wasn't able to find a suitable option. Which led me

to assume that other people might have the same problem.

We then designed information architecture that aligned with the natural flow of a user journey.

The visual design had to be easy to understand and informative, but it also had to appeal to our target audience. It also had to be consistent with the Toyota branding and style guide.

Once the users open the website, they immediately see filters on the left, centered featured core CTAs such as "Buy Used Cars" or "Sell Used Cars" and promotions.

Simple filters are located on the left-hand side for convenient search amongst thousands of certified vehicles. This side menu stays as a user navigates the site so that the content remains relevant to their preferences.

 

However, if the user is more experienced, they are able to apply a more detailed filter to their search. They can do so by clicking "Advanced filters" right below the search button. It will open advanced filters (eg. type of car, drive, color) on the right as an overlay, without closing simple filters (eg. price, location, mileage).

As I was just starting my UX career, it was very important for me to have such a big design team led by a talented art-director.

I was a member of the Greensight team — leading e-commerce development agency in Russia. On this project, I worked as a UX/UI Designer together with a two Senior Designers and an Art-Director.

 

I was responsible for initial wireframing, user flow and visual design for the filters function, alongside one of the Senior Designers.
